Dental Braces: Everything You Need to Know Before Getting Them

Are there gaps between your teeth that are making you self-conscious? Are your teeth crooked or crowded, making it difficult to brush or floss correctly? Then, you must be definitely thinking about getting Dental Braces. If you are confused about where to get dental teeth braces in Abu Dhabi, you need to get in touch with an experienced orthodontist.  Dental braces are an orthodontic treatment that works on correcting the alignment of teeth and the jaw, correcting bite issues, and improving the appearance of your smile. The orthodontist will be able to correctly assess whether you actually need braces, what kind of braces are needed, and how long they must be worn for effective treatment. Before you decide on opting for braces, there are a few things that you need to be aware of.

Right Age For Getting Braces

There is no right age for getting braces, though it may be easier to get orthodontic treatment for children between ages 7-14 when their permanent teeth have just set in and their jaws are still developing. Dental braces are usually recommended once the child reaches teenage and most of the permanent teeth have erupted. There is no upper age limit for getting braces, if the adult has sound oral health or dental issues such as missing teeth and cavities have been effectively rectified.

Types of Dental Braces

Different types of braces are now available, varying in price, comfort level, the severity of the orthodontic condition, and personal preferences. Traditional dental braces are metal braces that use stainless steel bands, brackets, and wires that are attached to the front of the teeth to shift teeth into their correct position. Ceramic braces (also known as clear braces) work just like metal braces but because they are tooth-coloured, they are less noticeable. However, they are not as strong as metal braces and are more likely to break. Lingual braces are popular because they are invisible – they are fixed to the back surface of the teeth. Aligners or invisible braces use custom-made trays to straighten the teeth over time. The most popular brands of aligners are Invisalign® and ClearCorrect®.

Average Treatment Time For Braces

On an average, dental braces are worn for between 12-24 months. The actual time taken would depend on how much orthodontic intervention is required, the type of braces being used, and how well the individual’s body responds to the treatment. To ensure that the treatment is effective and completed within time, the patient must also ensure that they follow the orthodontist’s advice and maintain healthy oral hygiene and habits.

Discomfort When Wearing Braces

An individual wearing braces will have some extent of discomfort and soreness for the first week or so after the treatment starts. There will not be any unbearable pain requiring medication, except for the application of a gel or ointment, if needed. Drinking chilled drinks can help to relieve the soreness to a large extent. As treatment progresses, the braces will need to be tightened, which can also be uncomfortable but bearable and will gradually ease away.

Impact on Facial Appearance

Dental braces are fixed to the front of the teeth so they can make the patient’s lips look more pronounced. Some people also experience a minor lisp in their speech after wearing braces. However, as the patient and the people around him/her get used to the idea of wearing braces, it will become almost unnoticeable. Also, the end result of the treatment on the patient’s smile and facial appearance often makes any social discomfort worth the trouble!

Cleaning Teeth With Braces

Food particles are more likely to get stuck in teeth when wearing braces and it can become embarrassing especially when eating at public places or in social gatherings. It is important to carry a dental kit at all times to clean the food particles after a meal. Brushing teeth may be relatively easy to achieve but flossing while wearing braces can be extremely difficult and may require the help of flossing threaders or water flossers. The orthodontist is the best person to advise on how to maintain the teeth after wearing braces.

Retainers For Aftercare

The orthodontic treatment is not complete once the braces are removed. It is important to prevent the teeth from moving back to their original positions by wearing retainers until the bite stabilizes. Retainers may be needed for 6-12 months or sometimes longer depending on the severity of the original orthodontic problem. The risk of the teeth going back to their original position is maximum during the first six months after removal of the dental braces. Teeth that have been rotated for alignment may take up to a year or more to stabilize. Similarly, if the braces were for correcting gaps between teeth, retainers may be required to be worn permanently during the night to ensure that they do not shift again after treatment.
