Root Canal Treatment : What You Need to Know

root canal treatment

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is an endodontic procedure to treat infections in the soft dental pulp. The dental pulp is the innermost part of the tooth that contains a network of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues. Root Canal Treatment in Abu Dhabi is carried out by dental specialists called Endodontists.

Need For Root Canal Treatment

The root canal is the part of the tooth that travels from the root of the tooth into the dental pulp chamber. The pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to dental decay, large cavity fillings, dental trauma, or after repeated dental procedures on a tooth. Damage to the dental pulp causes it to break down, giving free space for bacteria to multiply, form a pus-filled pocket, and cause an infection or an abscessed tooth. This results in severe pain, swelling in the gums that can spread to the face, neck, or head, tooth discoloration and bleeding, and bone loss around the root.

Preparing For RCT Procedure

The root canal procedure causes more discomfort than pain. However, it is advised to be mentally and physically prepared for the procedure to make it a more comfortable experience. When an endodontist recommends an RCT, it is important to ask questions and understand what the procedure is, the reason why it has been recommended, and the benefit of getting it done. The endodontist will recommend abstinence from alcohol and tobacco for 24 hours before the procedure and to get a good night’s rest so that the patient will be calm and at ease before the procedure. Rest and sleep are also recommended after the procedure as recovery happens best when the body is resting. Since it may be difficult to eat for a few hours after the RCT, it is advised to eat a couple of hours before the procedure, unless otherwise informed by the endodontist.

The Root Canal Procedure

The root canal treatment is a procedure to remove the infected dental pulp to arrest further damage. After the damaged pulp is removed, the tooth is cleaned and disinfected before being filled and sealed so that there is no further growth of bacteria in the area. Once this is completed, the tooth is covered with a dental crown or filling to protect it and restore functionality of the tooth.

Following Root Canal Treatment

The root canal treated teeth will be relieved from bite. A warm saline gargle is suggested. Patient should be prescribed a combination of analgesic and anti inflammatory tablets to be consumed if necessary. They should be informed about placement of crown after Root Canal Treatment.

Tooth Sensitivity After Procedure

The RCT procedure may take more than one sitting and there may be a temporary dental crown in place while the treatment is ongoing. It is important to avoid chewing with the tooth that is under treatment. After the treatment is completed, the endodontist will provide a detailed set of instructions on how to care for the tooth while recovering from the RCT. As the effect of the pain medication given during the procedure wears off, there may be soreness and tenderness in the area around the tooth for a few days due to tissue inflammation and the endodontist may recommend over-the-counter medication to help with the same.

Foods To Eat and Avoid After Procedure

To allow the area around the treated tooth to recover and for the dental crown to set well, it is advisable to eat soft foods that are nutritious and easy to eat for the first few days. It is also important to minimize chewing with the treated tooth till it is healed. Proteins like eggs, tofu, hummus, peanut butter or fish, healthy fats from avocado, cheese, yogurt or cottage cheese, soups, smoothies, soft fruits, mashed potatoes, and grains like oatmeal, couscous, and soft bread can be consumed during recovery.

Eating sticky or chewy foods, very hot or very cold foods and drinks, nuts or crunchy foods like chips can increase tooth sensitivity during the recovery period and could do damage to the dental crown while it is still setting. These foods can be avoided till the soreness and sensitivity around the area have eased and the crown has adhered well to the tooth.

When To See Your Dentist

While some amount of tenderness is normal after an RCT, you should visit your dentist if any of the following symptoms occur:

  • Severe pain or pressure at the site of the RCT or when pain lasts for more than a few days
  • Swelling that is plainly visible around the inside or outside of the mouth
  • Experiencing pain, sensitivity, or other symptoms that were present before the treatment was taken.
